Does the color of the belt indicate any characteristics for the belt ?

Yes… different colors often help discriminate different type of material & hardness of the belt-- also if there is a reinforcement.

Purpose of having hardness for belt

The application needs and priorities decides the belt material . However harder belts take more load with much less elongation , while soft flexible belts are preferred for small diameters.

Grip is much higher on soft belts and low in harder belts . Harder belts may slide well on skids , take more load , help in applications needing accumulation of products. Softer belts justify the need for appropriate grip.

Different constructions , section and fabrication possibilities help make optimum use of different hardness materials.

How positive drive belts superior to normal conveyor belt ?

There are fabric layers in the conveyor belt on rubbing with the structure the fibre tends to fray. Resulting into micro organism build- up. However mono material belts have no fabric. So, the micro growth is restricted. The working principle of positive belt and flat conveyor is the same. So, it has all the benefits that slat chain offer.Positive belts do not require tension, so the loads on the shaft and bearings is low. The positive belts have good characteristics of mono belt and slat chains.

How positive belts are superior to mono material belts ?

Mono-Material belt assures optimum level of hygiene however there is risk of slippage in wet condition. In positive drive belt there is physical engagement between sprocket teeth and belt teeth. Thus, there is no chance of slippage. The belt as where is no slippage belt do not leave its position.

What are the criteria for belt selection?

There are various factors:

  • Load

  • Material to be conveyed

  • Environment

  • Temperature of product

  • Length & width of belt

  • Angle of inclination

  • Type of belt support Roller / Skid plate

  • Economy

Based on above information & belt characteristics, the choice of belt is to be made.. OR just fill in the questionnaire & send to us & leave the spadework to us. We will recommend the belt most suitable for your application.

Is Crowning must ?

Crowning is the best method for tracking the belt. Once done there is zero maintenance throughout the life of the system, This works in both directions so Crowning is not a must but that is recommended by all belt manufacturers.

How much should be the crowning ?

Tha formula below will approximately give crowning value for the roller. However there are other factors like belt length, type of the belt etc.

Compare to Skid plate rollers offer very low friction then why is it not preferred everywhere ?

Rollers supports are suitable for handling product like boxes. However, it is difficult to handle products like powder to handle on the conveyor with the rollers support. So, normally they are used where loads and length of the conveyors are very high.

What is shelf life of the conveyor Belts ?

There is no definite answer because the shelf life depends on environments, the way the belt is stored. Many times shelf life is less than the life of the belt put on the machine. To Avoid this the belt in the stored should be open then its bending place should be shifted. If this is not done then cracks develop at the bending position. To improve the belt life it should be stored in semi-transparent good quality plastic paper kept in a control humidity and temperature room

What are the reasons for belt failure?

The belt failures can be due to numerous reasons and the postmortem is difficult as most of the time the belt is replaced by the staff without noting the signs of failure.
If the belt fails after working for 12 hour or more normally it is not due to manufacturing defects.

What are the advantages of Carbon belt replacing chain drive ?

  • You get at least double life with a carbon belt.

  • No duplication required

  • In Poly Chain belts metal to metal contact is not there, noise is less and much better pulley life.

  • Repeated tensioning is not required for the timing belt.

  • Consistent Efficiency: the Carbon Drive belt provides consistent efficiency over the lifetime of the drive. In contrast, chain efficiency decreases with wear wand dirt.

Why do you insist for minimum order Quantity ?

The overhead cost is increasing and it has started hurting many industries because now customers are asking for traceability in case of failure. Whether a customer is buying one pulley or 100 pulley the cost of sending quotation, processing order and collecting payment is the same for both. So, many european suppliers leavy billing cost from 10$ - 30$ per bill which barely covers the expenditure involved in case of small quantity order.

Is PolyChain carbon the strongest belt? Why is it not used everywhere?

Yes. POLY CHAIN CARBON is the strongest belt.
The selection of the belt depends on the application, available space & economy. If adequate space is available then we recommend PowerGrip GT4 belts which makes the drive economical.

What are the best method of packing a timing belt and best method of storage ?

Product should be kept away from direct sunlight, fumes of chemicals, dust and dirt. It should be stored at around 5 degree centigrade - 20 degree centigrade. Minimum recommended dia for forward and reverse flexing to be maintained. Belt can be hanged on the (hooks, rod etc). However if the belt is long and heavy then we should use two or more rods. Belt should be preferably wrapped in the plastic film.

Do you think Timing belts are costlier than V - belt?

Most of the V-belt failures are due to improper design, installation and maintenance of the drive. This is left unnoticed because the drive is running though at the lower efficiency. V-belt tends to slip for meeting misalignment and underrated drive. If you compare properly designed and manufactured pulley as per recommended standards you will find the timing belt pulleys are cheaper than equivalent V-belt. In addition to initial cost there is saving due to small pulley diameter, smaller width of the pulley and less tension on the belt resulting in improved belt life. You will be surprised to note, we have replaced the 6 inch wide V-pulley drive with a 20mm wide timing belt, working satisfactory for 4 to 5 years.

Are fingers necessary for timing belt drive ?

There are various joining methods, finger joints are one of them. Depending on application, type of joint is decided. These belt joints are popular for conveyor application.

What is pre-tension? Is it necessary to give pre-tension for timing belt drive?

As we start drive, one side becomes tight whereas the other side becomes slack to accommodate belt elongation. Higher the pull higher the elongation resulting into higher sag. To reduce this sag the belt is pre-tensioned.

Why is the minimum pulley diameter recommended?

The strength of the belt depends on the type and diameter of the fibre. As the fibre diameter increases the Minimum diameter of the pulley will increase. We offer a special belt in which instead of a single bigger diameter of the fibre, a small diameter of the fibres are bunched together. This results in a reduced minimum diameter of the pulley..

What is the maximum speed for the timing belt ?

Normal recommended speed for timing belt is 35 m/s. Our this restriction is due to lower grade pulley material.By using graded casting of En24 material we can increase the speed up to 45 m/s

Why do belt manufacturers normally recommend 2 or 3 combinations for an application ?

We have several base belts and several coatings on them. It is very difficult to judge all characteristics between two surfaces plus it is also difficult to procaste the behaviour. There are many variable factors like friction value, temperature, speed, precision required and cost etc. So normally belt manufacturers offer 2 or 3 best possible combinations and the final decision is to be taken after a successful trial.

Belting Enterprises keep a variety of coating material in stock. There are various manufacturing methods for special coated belts depending on the requirements we recommend belts and coating on them. We also offer a combination of 2 or more coatings enabled in a belt.

Recently many fabricated belts are introduced in the market.

In the last decade, many engineering materials are added resulting into solutions which were earlier not thought of. Vacuum belt, Timing belt with pin joint, boom conveyor for truck loading, cleated conveyor belts. These belts are so common that one do not realise that these are fabricated belts

Every Fabricated belt is an answer to a question.

Yes every made to order belt is especially made for a new application. Like rubber coated Timing belts are used for Form fill and Seal machines. Rubber coated Poly V belts are used for cable drawing machines. Here are: two different materials timing belt (no slip) and Poly v belt(has slip) are used for same drawing application
Some fabricated belts with application are given below:

  • Underside cleats like K13, K17, KN13 etc are used for tracking belts

  • Pin joints for timing belts are used where endless timing belts can not be installed.

  • Vacuum belts are used for conveying light material like envelopes/ paper.

  • Conveyor belt with cleats and sidewall is used for lifting the material to a certain height.

  • Combination of high friction and low friction conveyor belt is used to increase or decrease the gap between the product.

  • There are many combinations to achieve satisfied results.

Why is the quality of timing pulley given more importance?

Poorly manufactured V pulley will result in an inefficient drive which has more slippage, more losses and low life. However, it will work for maybe a few days or a few weeks. For a timing pulley, matching pulley and belt profile is must otherwise the belt will break within a short time. So, Quality pulley manufacturing is important for both V Pulleys and Timing Pulleys.

How to improve life of aluminium pulleys? or Advantage of coating the pulleys

Metals when an exposed air gets oxidized and a dirty layer is formed on the surface of the pulley. To avoid rusting normally N.F. Pulleys are blackened or phosphatized. If you need better life and more accuracy the pulley should be electroless nickel coated. In this process the surface of the pulleys becomes hard and also rustproof. Aluminium material can be anodized and depending on the requirement of the user the hardness of the pulley can be different.

Why is pulley width more than belt width?

Pulley width will be always greater than belt width. This is to avoid belt running out of pulley teeth or belt riding over the side flanges. Due to spiral binding of the tensile member, misalignment in the pulleys. Errors in the pulley and belt manufacturing there will be always some tracking to overcome this problem, pulley width is always more than belt width. For certain profiles pulley width is equal to belt tooth. E.g. BATK profile

What material should be used for manufacturing timing pulley?

The timing belt is a positive drive and a pulley exerts pressure on the belt teeth and there is some friction when the belt enters or leaves the pulley this causes wear and tear of the pulley and belt. More the load more pressure will be exerted on the pulley teeth. So, higher loads need stronger material. Normally, pulleys for classical pitch and T series belts are aluminium material and higher pitches the pulleys are MS/EN8 or grades casting. The life can be further improved by hard anodizing aluminium pulley or electroless nickel plating and other material.

Can PGGT belts be used on HTD Pulleys?

For Accurately manufactured timing pulleys 8MGT & 14MGT belts can be used on HTD Pulleys. However, 5MGT & 3MGT belts can not be used on 5MHTD or 3MHTD Pulleys. Please ask us for the chart showing compatibility of different types of belts used on the pulley with different profiles.

What are the best belt characteristics

The belt which has high strength, lower thickness and high flexibility are supposed to be the best belt. However thickness and flexibility are opposite characteristics. So, if we reduce thickness the strength reduces but flexibility reduces. . A compromise has to be made between flexibility, strength and economy depending on the application.

What are the factors responsible for improved belt performance ?

The main reason is improvement in tensile member strength and flexibility. This improvement has resulted in smaller pulley dia or smaller belt width for the same transmission capacity.
